To enter the Washington Youth Tour Contest you must submit a 500 word essay on “In your opinion, what are the benefits and pitfalls of the Internet?” Please submit the essay and a photo of yourself to: West River Cooperative Telephone Company, Attention: Helen Aaker, PO Box 39, Bison, SD 57620.

Deadline for submitting the essay is April 7, 2009.

The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Washington Youth Tour will be held from Saturday, May 30 to Wednesday, June 3, 2009. The Tour provides students from rural areas a first-hand look at the telecommunications industry, along with educating them about the legislative and governmental processes. While in the nation’s capital, they will visit famous historical sites, including the Washington Monument, Smithsonian Institution, National Cathedral, U.S. Capitol and Arlington National Cemetery.

In order to enter, your parents must be a member of West River Cooperative Telephone Company. All essays must be typed and include a cover sheet which states the title of the essay, the entrant's name, and the school he/she attends.

$1,000 SDATC Scholarships Available

West River Cooperative Telephone Company, along with the South Dakota Association of Telephone Cooperatives (SDATC), is encouraging college students to apply for SDATC Memorial Scholarships for the coming school year.

The SDATC Memorial Scholarships are available to applicants who have completed at least two semesters of course work at an accredited post-secondary school in South Dakota and whose family is a member/customer of an SDATC member company, such as West River Cooperative Telephone Company. The scholarship can be used at any post-secondary educational institution in South Dakota, including public and private universities, technical schools, and community colleges.

Preference will be given to applicants with majors that are applicable to today’s communications industry. These include but are not limited to the following: Engineering (Computer Science or Systems, Electrical, CAD, Software, Industrial, Communications Systems, Network Security); Business (Economics, Marketing, Human Resource, Accounting, Management, Communications, Business Law); Technologies (Communications Systems Engineering Technologies, Computer Programming, Computer Software Specialist, Computer Systems or Software, Satellite Communications, Utilities Technologies, Network Technician); Computers (Internet Apps Developer, Laser/Electro-Optics, Marketing, Network Administration, System Administrator, Computer Applications); Technology Education; and Communication Arts (Graphic or Mass Communications, Commercial Arts, Multimedia/Web Development.)

The scholarship program began with a single $300 scholarship in 1987. Since the scholarship fund was established, SDATC has awarded nearly $45,000 to help 69 students receive their post-secondary education.

Three $1,000 SDATC Memorial Scholarships are available for the 2010 fall semester.
